Overview

What Cryotherapy is

Whole body cryotherapy exposes the skin to very cold air for a short, controlled period. It is dry cold, which is far more tolerable than the equivalent in water.

What it involves

Your session, step by step

  1. Before you start

The first thirty seconds feel the hardest. Most people leave feeling alert and warm as circulation returns. You can train the same day.

    Step 1 of 2
  2. During the session

You enter the chamber in minimal clothing with extremities protected, and stay for up to three minutes while a member of the team monitors you throughout.

Questions

Cryotherapy, answered

What the evidence supports, and what it does not.

Cold enough that the first thirty seconds take some resolve. Because it is dry cold rather than water, it is considerably more tolerable than the temperature suggests, and a member of the team is with you the whole time.

For the recovery therapies — cryotherapy, compression, red light, PEMF — your first visit includes a short induction so we can screen you and show you how the therapy works. For anything clinical, including IV drips, wellness injections, blood testing and HBOT courses, we ask for a consultation first so a clinician can check it is appropriate for you.

If you have specific areas of inflammation or pain, local cryotherapy can alleviate symptoms and reduce any inflammation in the treated area. It is particularly effective when you have an injury and are looking for faster recovery and return to normality.

Local cryotherapy is also most effective when you need specific focus to support skin rejuvenation and body contouring. It is also extremely beneficial when combined with manual lymphatic drainage to boost the removal of toxins from the body.

Local cryotherapy can also be used as a preventative method to strengthen muscles & joints to reduce the possibility of future injuries. Additionally, it can increase fatigue resistance and thus boost the ability to train.

Whilst there are risks associated with exposure to low temperatures such as frostbite and burns, we provide protective equipment to cover specific parts of your body, and we will also monitor your therapy to ensure everything is safe. If, for any reason, you find the therapy painful, we can stop and assess any issues before continuing or adjusting the treatment.

Whole Body Cryotherapy lasts for roughly 15 minutes with 3 mins within the chamber. We recommend ten minutes of light exercise/walk post cryotherapy, which will induce more rapid vasodilation of the blood vessels and capillaries and extend the period of analgesia. It is also ideal post-workout to speed athletic recovery and ease sore muscles.

Ideally, you want to wear as little clothing as possible. We'll provide you with a robe if you prefer extra coverage. Maximum benefit is derived from exposing as much bare flesh as possible, causing the best even skin temperature drop in as little time as possible.

We will provide you with a headband, socks, slippers and gloves to use during your Cryotherapy session, these will be returned after use and cleaned for the next client.

Anyone of any age who wishes to reduce inflammation in the body can benefit from cryotherapy.

Children under 18 must have written consent from a parent or guardian and must be accompanied by that guardian during the session.

Whilst cryotherapy can be beneficial to everyone, if you are unsure or have a high health risk or a severe medical condition, you should seek medical advice. Additionally, the following conditions should be medically advised before booking: Pregnancy; Heart Disease; Very High Blood Pressure; Very Low Blood Pressure; Cold-Activated Asthma; Severe Raynaud's Syndrome; Hypertension; Anaemia; Severe allergy to the cold.

Cryotherapy involves dry, hyper-cooled air flowing over the skin's surface, so the process never freezes skin tissues, muscles or organs. Cryotherapy does not reduce core temperature, and as such, it is unusual to shiver in the chamber.

The result is only a “feeling” of being cold. It stimulates the body to release endorphins, the hormones that make us feel alert and energetic.

After effects include skin tightness, boosted energy and increased metabolism which may make you feel naturally warmer for longer as skin temperatures are regained.

All Biowell treatments are best enjoyed as a result of a regular routine. Single treatments can be taken, but we recommend doing Whole Body Cryotherapy three to five times a week for the first two weeks for maximum benefit. This will induce the desired effects in the body and then you should maintain use regularly afterwards.

Our qualified team can also advise and assist those in training or with specific requirements for whom a double session (where cryotherapy is delivered more than once a day) may be best for optimised outcomes.

There is no limit to how many sessions you can have, but it is advised not to have more than two every day.

Definitely, we advise combining therapies (bio-stacking) to advance results and greatest optimisation. In partnership with Kloodos, we also advise that when you commence your optimisation journey with us, you consider our ‘prep for wellness protocols’, which focus on lymphatics, the vagus system and mitochondrial health. Not only do protocols supercharge the results you can expect to achieve from every therapy across the Biowell menu, they also were developed by Kloodos to help enhance and benefit your overall health, mental-health, longevity and wellness.
