Overview
What Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy involves resting in a pressurised chamber while breathing oxygen-enriched air. The raised pressure increases the amount of oxygen carried in the blood and dissolved into the body's tissues.
A session at Biowell takes place in a comfortable seated chamber. You can read, listen to something, or simply rest.
What it involves
Your session, step by step
Before you start
Your first visit includes an induction so we can check the therapy is appropriate for you.
Step 1 of 3During the session
Pressure inside the chamber is raised gradually over the first few minutes. You will feel a fullness in your ears, similar to a plane taking off, and we will show you how to equalise comfortably.
Step 2 of 3Afterwards
Sessions typically last 60 minutes. Most people are comfortable throughout; some feel tired afterwards, particularly in the first week.
Step 3 of 3

Who it is for
Who explores this
- People recovering from injury or surgery
- Those managing persistent fatigue or brain fog
- Athletes whose recovery is not keeping pace with training
- People exploring options for longevity and brain health
Guidance
Understand Before you book
Not suitable for everyone. We will ask about your medical history, including any lung conditions, recent ear surgery, or if you are pregnant. If HBOT is not appropriate for you, we will say so and suggest alternatives.

Explore by goal
This therapy is often part of
Most people arrive with a goal rather than a therapy in mind. These are the ones this sits inside.

Injury recovery
Recovery is not just rest. The right support at the right point can shorten the gap between injured and fully capable.
- 4 to 8 weeks
- From £85 per session

Surgery recovery
The weeks after an operation shape how well you come out of it. We support that window with your surgical team's guidance.
- From £95 per session
- Consultation

Healthy ageing
Healthy ageing is less about adding years and more about keeping the things you can do now — mobility, energy, clarity and recovery.
- 12 weeks
- From £95 per session

Brain health
Brain fog, poor focus and mental fatigue usually have physical contributors. We look for the ones we can influence.
- 8 to 12 weeks
- From £95 per session

Energy and lifestyle optimisation
Persistent tiredness is the most common reason people come to us, and it is rarely solved by being told to sleep more.
- 8 weeks
- From £85 per session

Performance and recovery
If you are training seriously, recovery is the limiting factor. We help you get more out of the work you are already doing.
- 8 to 12 weeks

Questions
HBOT, answered
What the evidence supports, and what it does not.
Mostly like sitting quietly in a comfortable, slightly enclosed space. As the pressure rises you feel fullness in your ears, similar to a plane taking off, and we show you how to clear them. After that there is nothing much to feel. Many people read or fall asleep.
It depends what you are using it for. Recovery from a specific injury is often a shorter, more intensive block; general support is usually a longer, less frequent pattern. We will give you an honest estimate at your consultation rather than selling you a fixed package before we know your situation.
It is well tolerated by most people when properly screened and supervised, which is why we screen before your first session. It is not suitable for everyone — certain lung conditions, recent ear surgery and pregnancy among them. If it is not right for you, we will tell you and suggest something that is.
For the recovery therapies — cryotherapy, compression, red light, PEMF — your first visit includes a short induction so we can screen you and show you how the therapy works. For anything clinical, including IV drips, wellness injections, blood testing and HBOT courses, we ask for a consultation first so a clinician can check it is appropriate for you.
It is recommended that you wear comfortable clothing made from natural fibres so that you can relax and enjoy the therapy.
While the air pressure in the pressure chamber increases during hyperbaric oxygen therapy, a feeling of fullness is experienced in the ears, similar to the sensation felt when flying on a plane. Just as when you are flying, you can equalise the pressure in your ears with certain movements, such as swallowing or yawning. If you do feel uncomfortable, one of our team members is always available so the pressure can be reduced, building up more slowly or, if desired, ending the session.
You will wear a special adjustable mask to receive the oxygen. You should not find this uncomfortable, but you may need to adapt to it, and initially, you may need to tweak the mask for optimum comfort. This superior mask attaches directly to the advanced quality-assured ventilation system built into the chamber, delivering 95% pure oxygen.
You are allowed to bring limited personal items into the chamber: bottled water, a personal electronic device or a book. Please check with the health concierge upon arrival for any additional items you may need. Please note that any cracks in electronic device screens may cause further damage due to the increased pressure in the chamber. If you have any concerns throughout the therapy, it can be paused, and a member of staff will be available to assist you.
There are 3 types of therapy that you can choose from. While our 60- and 90-minute therapies deliver optimised results, our express 30-minute therapy is available to support ongoing treatment, especially when time is not on your side.
Our therapies are designed to meet individual needs and conditions. Biowell-trained staff will consult with you and recommend the best session and personalised therapy plan. Every therapy length will benefit you, but if you are unsure, please contact one of our health team members and they will advise. In most cases, you will benefit from more than one session, so it might be worth considering our packages.
There are no restrictions on the number of treatments that you can have, but it is recommended that multiple sessions will have the greatest effect. We will take you through the guidelines before any optimum program and advise you on rest periods as well.
It is advised that ongoing regular use will help support optimisation and to maintain the benefits through treatments. While the total number of sessions advised varies depending on the condition and optimisation target, one session per day can be applied if required.
Definitely. We advise combining therapies (bio-stacking) to advance results and greatest optimisation. We also advise that when you commence your optimisation journey with us you have Compression Therapy in the first instance to prepare the body to derive maximum benefit from each individual therapy.
Yes, there should be no problems with receiving HBOT whilst you are pregnant, but you should refer through your medical specialist.
If you have any of the following conditions or if you are unsure, you should seek medical advice before booking: a collapsed lung (pneumothorax) or a lung disease that may increase your risk of getting a collapsed lung, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis and emphysema; a fever or cold; a recently injured ear.
Breathing nearly 100% oxygen under high pressure not only increases the oxygen carried to the tissues by means of haemoglobin in red blood cells but also improves the tissue damage and pathologies caused by insufficient oxygenation by increasing the dissolved free oxygen in the blood to very high values. In addition: the production of substances that provide wound healing increases; cells involved in body defence are supported; it shows an oedema-reducing effect; new vessel development is supported; bacteria that grow in an oxygen-free environment are prevented from multiplying; the effectiveness of some toxins released by bacteria decreases; and the effect of some antibiotics increases.
By providing our therapies in the safest way through our highly trained teams and using the best quality & safety assured chambers, we mitigate at the highest level. With this understanding, potential risks can still include: middle ear injuries, including leaking fluid and eardrum rupture, due to changes in air pressure; temporary near-sightedness (myopia), caused by temporary eye lens changes; seizures as a result of too much oxygen (oxygen toxicity) in your central nervous system; and lowered blood sugar in people who have diabetes treated with insulin.
You should feel relaxed but energised. Sleep is restored. Gut health is improved. Pain should be noticeably reduced.
It varies considerably, and we try to be straight about that. Some therapies have a solid research base for specific uses; others are promising but early. We will tell you which is which for the therapies we recommend to you, and we will not overstate what the research supports.
For individual recovery therapies such as the sauna, compression or red light, you can book directly. For anything clinical — IV therapy, HBOT courses, or any programme — we ask for a consultation first so we can check it is appropriate for you.
